The Carbon County Cultural Project is pleased to announce a solo show of new
works by Joe Sweeney entitled "Summer Paintings". Opening reception for the
artist: Saturday, September 22 from 3 to 8 pm at the CCCP Gallery. The show
will run through the month of October.

Sweeney’s gorgeous depictions allow us to experience those places and
moments in light as they are preserved on his canvas much like Amber has
preserved ancient life for future generations. Joe Sweeney's work is about
finding a sense of place, the figure in landscape, man's relationship with
nature, and the effect that building has on the balance between nature and
man.

Joe Sweeney (b.1950) lives in Ardmore, PA and has shown his work nationally
and internationally over the last decade, including an important exhibition
at Haverford College entitled "Pennsylvania Landscape, Colonial to
Contemporary" where his work was on display alongside that of Andrew Wyeth
and . Many public and private institutions, private collections, and museums
own his works including AT&T, Bank of Tokyo, the Federal Reserve Bank of
Philadelphia, and The Pew Trust.

Sweeney has focused on the changing landscape in America -- since 1950, the
year he was born Pennsylvania has lost an area of farmland larger than the
states of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined.

"For me, reading a landscape, that is, painting a horizon, the trees, the
buildings, gives a special kind of information far beyond that which can be
gathered by written descriptions alone. The experienced observer can
determine the health of a place and its people by looking at the condition
of the land these people inhabit. It is with these things in mind that I
approach a landscape," Sweeney says.

Joe Sweeney teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), and
the University of the Arts (UARTS). His plein air painting class which will
be held in Jim Thorpe at the end of October is eligible for 1.0 credit from
the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Sweeney is currently
on show at the Shawinigan Space in La cité de l'Énergie and has been
organized by the National Gallery of Canada.

New Novel by Nic East

This is my second of a series of five novels already written.  The first, MINDFLASH I, Korallia has been out for three years now.  This continues the series with the heroes’ return to Earth. The next three will be numbered MINDFLASH Vol III, IV and V and will be named Asteroid, Creativity and The Sand Planet respectively. When these three are published, I will probably have another three or more already written.  MINDFLASH Vol I has had a continual five star rating on www.amazon.com, and I hope this novel will be similarly received by my readers.

May 6th in Jim Thorpe will be like no other we’ve seen yet. Under the Stairs Gallery, Moya, and Big Idea Gallery will all be exhibiting NEW WORK!

Photography of Terry Walker

Dakota Ridge Gallery
Opening 7 pm Saturday, May 7, 2005

Until recently, the works of wilderness photographer Terry Walker were unknown to the art world, but not unrecognized. A selection of his early work was singled out personally by Ansel Adams for publication in his book “Ansel Adams Polaroid Land Photography”, printed in 1978 by New York Graphic Society: Boston. Several of Walker’s other photographs are part of the permanent Polaroid Collection. However, reclusive by nature, Terry Walker then disappeared from the public world of photography for 20 years. Over that time, he focused on the issue that animates his art, the rapidly vanishing wilderness. His photographic work has only recently begun to circulate again and has found its way into several well-known galleries across the country.
